YES it is fact, that you can develop an addiction to your own brain chemicals.

We often equate the term “addiction” with drug or alcohol abuse. It is also linked to eating, gambling, and even sex. Many individuals are unaware however, that there is another sort of addiction that is more internalised and that is Emotional Addiction.

Every emotion, whether happy or negative, is a complex mix of chemicals (neurotransmitters and hormones) produced by our brain in response to our thinking. This mixture flows throughout the body, causing comparable feelings on both a physical and psychological level.

The chemistry of emotion, like the chemistry of nicotine, alcohol, and narcotics, is highly addictive when repeated regularly over a long period of time. This is most obvious in the case of negative emotions, which release stress hormones, that our bodies can easily start to crave like a drug in a twisted, self-destructive way.

People who acquire an emotional addiction get addicted to feeling a certain way or reacting to their strong, natural emotions.  In response to certain emotions, the brain produces chemical reactions, similar to those experienced while taking part in other addictive behaviours or substances.

When our cells are deprived of their “drug,” they send signals to the brain to release the substance to which they are hooked on. The mind immediately goes to work looking for thinking patterns or scenarios that will provide the desired chemical hit.

When our bodies become reliant on our own chemical responses, we have developed an emotional addiction.

1.  Recognize and accept that you have an emotional dependency.

2.  Make a decision to permanently change, returning to a healthy state of being and break away from this unconscious behaviour/habit.

3.  Have the awareness and watch every thought, every emotion. The moment you catch yourself on negative emotion — STOP.

4.  CONSCIOUSLY, replace it right away with a good thought that is the polar opposite. Don’t second guess yourself, back yourself.

5.  It could take a few days, weeks, or months to break the old habit and form new synaptic connections in your brain, so be consistent. The payoff is well worth the effort.
